Fall 2008
“Agents' Day”
in Ottawa

Our Agents’ Day in Ottawa on October 4, 2008 was a success. Nearly 50 participants, both writers and illustrators, gathered at the National Library to hear agents Kendra Marcus of BookStop Literary and Rebecca Sherman of Writers House.

Starting off the morning, Kendra Marcus told us all about what an agent does. If you thought selling your manuscript was the only thing an agent does then we quickly found out that is only part of the pictures.

Following that, Rebecca Sherman told us how to go about acquiring an agent giving us specific examples of query letters that worked. We learned what an agent expects from a prospective client and what a client can expect from an agent.

We were then able to listen in on the agents’ thoughts as anonymous participants’ manuscript first pages were read aloud by Rachel Eugster. The agents provided us with specific strengths and weaknesses of each piece so that we could all learn from each other.
The afternoon finished up with prearranged one-on-one teaching sessions, the book sale sponsored by Collected Works, and group round table discussions.

Lizann Flatt and Alma Fullerton, chapter advisors, want to thank all our volunteers, without whom this event would never have happened: Ellie Arscott, Peggy Collins, Rachel Eugster, Deborah Jackson, Michelle Jodoin, Stephanie Rainey, Connie Topper, Christine Tripp, and Noreen Violetta.

Thank you to all who attended!

And if you missed this event, please watch the Events page for future event announcements.
