Set in an alternative world in which the
technology is failing, sixteen-year-old Dovella undertakes
a journey to save her people from political and religious
upheaval. Dovella is a Village engineering apprentice
who has a rare healing Gift, but because of the danger
facing her people, she must journey immediately. This
means giving up her life's dream: to go through the
rites of the healer.
Intertwined with the story of Dovella's
difficult and dangerous journey are the events in the
Village. These make the success of her journey critical,
as the Council's opponents attempt to gain control through
violence and sabotage.
Although set in a fantasy world, Rites
of the Healer explores many of the dilemmas facing
contemporary teens.
